Shangri-La's Tanjung Aru Resort and Spa, Kota Kinabalu Wins Prime Minister's Hibiscus Award

Shangri-La's Tanjung Aru Resort and Spa, Kota Kinabalu won the Prime Minister's Hibiscus Award 2009 and received a Notable mention for Environmental Performance at the 2008/2009 Prime Minister's Hibiscus Award ceremony on 25 November 2009. Representing the resort was Andrew Steele, general manager and Tulip Noorazyze, director of communications who received the award from Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Datuk Douglas Uggah Embas.

The award recognises the resort's commitment to conserve and preserve the environment through the maintenance of a series of environmental programmes and instilling a sense of environmental responsibility amongst its 630 management and staff and the community. The resort was judged in terms of the benefit of its environmental programme to employees and the environment, the effect on the community, creating and maintaining the awareness of environmental conservation and the overall effectiveness of the environmental programme.

“This is the 12th environmental award we have received since we launched our environmental system in 2000. It shows how important it is to conserve the environment and the benefits that we can gain from it. It also reflects on the resort's commitment in protecting our environment through the environmental programme and the staff's dedication and contribution. Environmental practices have now become a part of the resort's culture”, said Mr. Steele

Since 2000, the resort has been the recipient of numerous local and international environmental awards such as the 2009 Sabah Environmental Awards for Outstanding Environmental Friendly Private Organisation and Outstanding Environmental Leadership, the 2006/2007 Prime Minister's Hibiscus Award for Notable Achievement in Environmental Performance and Sabah Environmental Award, and the 2005 PATA Gold Award in Corporate Environmental Programme.

Shangri-La's Tanjung Aru Resort and Spa, Kota Kinabalu was certified ISO 14001 (Environmental Management Standard) compliant in November 2000. In order to ensure continuous improvement to the system, a dedicated Environmental Management Committee spearheaded by Mr. Steele and supported by members of the resort's Executive Committee was established to integrate the system into the resort's business organisation structure.
