CMMI Brings New Look to Charleston's Island Resort
The Village at Wild Dunes
CHARLESTON, SC, August 22, 2006. Culpepper, McAuliffe and Meaders, Inc. (CMMI), an Atlanta-based architecture and interior design firm, is creating a fresh, family-oriented environment with a low country flair for The Village at Wild Dunes, located in the heart of the award-winning Wild Dunes Resort in Isle of Palms, S.C.
The firm is providing interior design services for Phase One and Phase Two of a new 256-unit condominium development - the first new luxury condominium property at Wild Dunes Resort in 10 years. Phase One, including 115 condominium units, a grocery/sundry store, and a restaurant/ bar, is currently under construction, with completion scheduled for fall 2007. Phase Two, including 141 condominium units, is slated for completion in summer 2009.
"Our design for The Village at Wild Dunes reinterprets a sense of old-world charm to fit a coastal lifestyle," says Julia Chi, interior designer. "We believe the eclectic atmosphere will appeal to all generations -- from very young couples to baby boomers."
An environment of casual sophistication is created with wrought iron, Venetian plaster, French doors and plantation shutters throughout the two-story condominium lobby. A striking metal globe-shaped chandelier with hurricane glass serves as a focal point, along with an oval pouf banquette seating area where residents can relax with family and friends.
The lobby includes Plantation and West Indies-style distressed mahogany furnishings, offset by tone-on-tone travertine and marble flooring throughout. An area rug adds a coastal flavor with imprints of large palm leaves and splashes of color. The light and airy color palette features variations of earthy autumn colors with rich accents of nautical blue, sea coral and ocean green.
The design team created an eclectic environment for the high-end condominium units that is refined, yet informal. The rooms feature three color schemes of nautical blue, ocean blue and sea coral, with a combination of light and dark plantation-style furniture and seating to give each room its own identity.
The units include maple hardwood flooring in the living rooms and wall-to-wall berber carpet with sage green accent stripes in the bedrooms. Whimsical throw pillows with playful patterns and cheery colors add comfort and character to the space. Travertine flooring, antique bronze hardware and decorative glass pendant lights are featured throughout the kitchens and bathrooms. Each bathroom includes a free-standing vanity and under mount sink as a unique centerpiece that offers a sense of added depth.
Residents and guests can enjoy a small town shopping experience at The Village at Wild Dunes in a gourmet grocery and sundry store designed with an urban European flair. The all-in-one store, which contains an ice cream parlor and wine shop, offers a beautiful white oak cabinet and sampling table where shoppers can taste food items. Subway-style white tile flooring, sparingly-accented exposed brick walls and a ceiling with floating tiles and funky, colorful murano glass pendant lights add to the hip, casual environment.
Adjacent to the store, CMMI mixed old and new elements including exposed brick work, tile, copper, colored concrete and wood in a 6,760-square-foot European seaside restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating. An aged copper archway suspends from the ceiling and creates a sense of arrival as guests enter the room.
The bar is constructed with coordinating copper panels, granite countertops and a combination of brick and concrete flooring. The open kitchen is surrounded by ceramic mosaic tiles that add color and drama as chefs prepare meals before their patrons. Galvanized metal chairs, decorative oak ceiling fans, and wide-plank distressed wood flooring bring the feel of old Charleston to the beach as guests enjoy the raw bar and seafood delicacies .
